We participated in the Roundtable on Remote Sensing-Based Soil Moisture Decision Support for Land and Water Management, organized by WELL Labs Rural Futures, IFMR in Bengaluru.
What the Roundtable Covered
This roundtable brought together WELL Labs, the Advanced Centre for Integrated Water Resource Management (ACIWRM, Govt of Karnataka), and Stanford University to explore how satellite-derived soil moisture data and citizen science approaches can strengthen land and water management decisions.
Key discussion areas:
- How satellite-derived soil moisture data can inform irrigation scheduling and drought response
- Citizen science approaches for ground-truthing remote sensing data
- Integration of soil moisture intelligence into existing government decision-making frameworks
- Scaling these approaches from pilot projects to state-level implementation
Smart Bhujal's Role
At Smart Bhujal, we work at the intersection of AI, remote sensing, and water resource management. We shared our experience building decision support systems that combine satellite data with AI to make water-related decisions more data-driven and accessible — directly relevant to the soil moisture use case discussed at this roundtable.
Acknowledgments
Thanks to Ashima Chaudhary and the WELL Labs team for organizing this important discussion, and to all participants from ACIWRM and Stanford for the exchange of ideas.
